Sue van Coppenhagen
Artist Profile

Inspired by the natural world, Sue’s delicate yet vibrant watercolours reflect a strong emotional connection to her environment: beaches, farmlands and woodlands, and the plants and creatures encountered there, emerge in her very personal and evocative paintings.

Born in South Africa, Sue made her home in Ireland in 2000. After some years in adult education, then managing a gallery while beginning to exhibit her paintings around Ireland, she turned to full time painting in 2012. In 2013 she was elected a member of the Water Colour Society of Ireland and exhibits with them annually. She also participates in Art Fairs and group exhibitions around Ireland, and has had several successful solo shows. Her paintings hang in collections around the world.

Her floral paintings have been awarded numerous medals, including Gold, and Best in Category, at the Exhibitions of Floral and Botanical Art at Bloom in Dublin. She has also had floral paintings exhibited with the Society of Botanical Artists in Westminster and at the Mall Galleries in London. She is known for her paintings of birds as well, and has undertaken commission work of bird paintings for the RSPB’s Christmas charity range.

Sue is passionate about the immediacy and magic of watercolour: “There is no greater excitement than watching pigment explode and flare in water; the fluidity allows a range from the diffuse and delicate to bold and juicy use of paint. Because light is reflected from the paper through layers of paint, one is able to achieve a high level of luminosity, making the paintings fresh, atmospheric and evocative “.

Sue shares her passion for watercolour in demonstrations to social groups and art societies, and in workshops and regular classes.
