Dave West
Artist Profile

Dave was born on the North Gower in South Wales and grew up in Swansea City before moving permanently to Ireland in his early twenties and now lives and works as a full-time artist and art educator in North County Dublin.

He is primarily a Landscape and Marine painter but explores many other subjects and genres also working in Watercolour, Pastel and Printmaking.

Dave is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian and Royal Ulster Academy Annual Shows and maintains a strong link with the UK showing for the past 3 years at the Royal Academy Summer show in addition to being a regular exhibitor at the Royal Cambrian Academy and the New English Art Club.

In 2025 Dave was elected an associate member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and won the Artists Magazine award at the annual exhibition.

Much of his work is executed ‘en plein air’ and Dave has taken part and won prizes at several plein air painting events including winning the Silver Award in 2024 and the Mayoral Gold Award in both 2025 and 2017 at ‘Art in the open’ Europe’s largest plein air festival held annually in Wexord Ireland.

He travels extensively around Ireland producing much of his work ‘en plein air’ (painting from life outdoors) spending much time on the Southern and Western seaboard exploring and painting the coastline all the way from Wexford to Donegal. Many of his larger studio works are based on smaller ‘plein air’ studies and he feels that this challenging method with its direct connection to the landscape enables him to capture a much deeper and richer experience than working from photographic sources.
